12 gallons of 93 octane pump gas. A 30 mile drive from Comp Cams to Memphis Motorsports Park. 3 passes later. you know where you stand amongst the fastest real street cars in the country. Some, arguably race cars, others being true dyed in the wool homebuilt street cars. Everyone had a common goal- one of the Top Ten jackets... pride and glory's more important than any type of monetary purse. It's just part of the racer mentality that few people outside of the sport seem to grasp. Consume two months of your life, thousands of dollars, drive 800 miles one way towing your car on a rented U-Haul trailer, for an event that lasts less than a day... with the only reward being a small snippet in a magazine, and some enthusiastic praise from spectators, other competitors, or the tech guys.
Is it an absurd way to live? Most likely. But if you have to ask in the first place, you probably wouldn't understand.
Here's some pictures from this year's Pump Gas Drags.
Somewhere in Kentucky on the tow down.
Test & tune in the hotel parking lot.
572 Hemi with twin dominators- no use screwing around!
U-Haul???? Real street cars don't need trailers! :)
Phillip Bridges' 1995 Firebird- couldn't make a pass because of a broken $1.75 brass fitting leaking trans fluid on the starting line.
Blown SBC powered VW Beetle- blew a head gasket on his first pass.
Jim Pranis's 68 Charger.
Gorgeous '69 Chevelle. He even drove the 30+ miles back to IHOP after the awards ceremony!
Turbo'd, 4dr AMC Rambler with a SBC. Ran in the 8's.
G-Force 5 speed, running 8.98...
Last year's winner, and 5th overall this year.
From atop a forklift... the Comp Cams lot.
572 Hemi power.
Dave Furedy on his way to a 9.30/149 pass.
Jim, about 45 seconds away from breaking his trans yoke into multiple pieces. It's gone 9.20's, but the strip gods weren't smiling on him today.
Furedy, just before pulling a fairly obnoxious wheelstand and getting loose near the 330' mark.
You either do it for love, or do it for money...
