Silver Lake 3
Well, another Silver Lake Sand Dunes trip has come and gone, and we're here to tell the story. This round was plagued by one thing... SHITTY WEATHER.
The trip started out with Jeremy Peterson stopping by my house Thursday night in his incredibly pimp 02 Cummins Dodge, QC H.O. Cruised out to the dunes on Friday morning/afternoon, unloaded the truck, aired down the tires, attached the flag, and promptly attempted Test Hill. 3 tries later (after some encouragement, mostly..."Don't be afraid to give 'er!") the Dodge was sitting at the top without issues.
We spent awhile driving around, then went back to the campground. Set the tents up, etc...drank a few beers, BS'd about trucks, noticed the Hydro-AX earth moving equipment parked nearby, and thought of the bad ideas. About that time, the remainder of the munkee crew showed up in the Dumpster, T-Dogg's GMC, and the 'Burban.
Since it was too late to head out on the dunes, the fire got started, the beer was consumed, and Skip fired up the grille. It was all fun and games 'til Skip brought out the Natty Ice and $7 Canadian Whiskey:
Price noted this as the bad idea for the evening, and it was readily apparent the next day when several of us were broken. 30* weather didn't help, either. It was overcast, and a sign of things to come...
Made it out on the dunes by 10am, commenced the usual screwing around. Found the waterholes:
T-Dogg got stuck once:
...and Skip jumped the Burban:
That landing buckled the passenger's side fender, and KO'd one of the hubs. Without 4wd, his day was done. Went back to the campsite, had dinner (at 3:30!!!), then the bad idea to make yukka came about.
After the 7 man yucca and several dozen beers, the executive decision was made to head back out while it was only slightly raining, and we were only half drunk. The result was an incredibly fun time- the Dumpster saw WOT for ~ 15 straight minutes and needed to pause for cool-down, and Jeremy's Cummins was just mind-boggling. A quote from Mr. Price:
"the Dodge was unreal. Bottom of the hill you nail it in 3rd. Game over.
At the same point where the burban or dumpster would be shifting from 2nd to
1st (in 4wd low) to try to make that last ditch effort to crest the dune,
the Ram would just be whistling along (still in 3rd) without a care in the
world. It made the dunes seem like a joke."
Speaking of, check out the video here.
With the rain, traction was abundant, Ed was letting other guys drive his truck, and a certain 4 cylinder Ranger was getting clowned mercilessly. Good times were had by all.
After heading back when it got nasty, we went in search of a klassy drinking establishment. Rollin' 7 deep in the Burban, listening to David Allan Coe. Found a halfway decent bar with mexican food (worst idea ever!) and spent the majority of our evening there. The freezing rain & high winds were deterring the camping, and most of our party cashed out early. Ed and I braved the cold, to steal a "Dumpster" sign around 1 am or so.
All in all, a fun weekend, but the weather was HORRIBLE. It would've been much more fun if it was only cold, or only wet...not both.
